Gully - “We will all miss you”

"We are very sad to say we lost a much loved horse, Gully.

“Gulliver (Whispering Tom)

On 29th October 2010 we lost another fine horse to age, yet, obvious sadness was tempered by relief that Gully's death was without the stress of illness and the certainty that comes with our experience that Gully was enjoying being active until seconds before he died.

We don't replace Gully for he was a stand out from the crowd horse and many were the riders whom he taught to be awake, but his box will have a new horse who will have no idea of the shoes he or she has to try and fill.

I'm sure that Gully would say to his replacement "You'll like it here, for if you show them  that you like bananas you'll get one every day.”

“It was with great sadness that i heard of Gullys passing, he is a true gentleman and always will be, never forgotten. Gully has certainly been a part of my life and my growing up. I am very thankful that i was able to see again after all these years before his passing, he truly was an exceptional old man in my eyes providing anyone who met him with amazing memories. gully patiently put up with my lunge lessons for years, my ability to fall off at stupid moments yet teach me an unbelievable amount of knowledge, I have been away from Houston for the last few years yet my heart has never truly left, i still have a painting of gully on my wall, now that painting is even more valuable.

Gully had patience with everyone, he had an amazing character he could be patient and calm with beginners, springy and excited, teach everyone from beginner to advanced new things and test abilities even when you think you could ride well!! Gully touched life's in ways we took for granted, even my mum who is non horsey was unbelievably upset to hear of the news, she managed to ride about 8 times before giving up due to fear yet she always returned to the yard with a apple just for gully who put up with her amount of fear and nerves.

Gully was an amazing friend, amazing and unforgettable teacher and will always hold a very special place in my heart and undoubtedly i am not the only one to feel this way.

No one will ever be able to replace gully he truly was one of a kind.”

“Hi All..

Thought i would drop you a wee email, to say how sorry I am for your loss of Gully, I have fond memories of the big fella, while working at Hfrs.!! Loved seeing his huge face and the whinnies he would do over his stable door when I arrived to start work, he was always checking my pockets out for a banana and some sneaky chocolate, which we kept to ourselves.. haha..

I remember him nipping my bum as soon as my back was turned, cheeky big sod..

Never had the experience to ride him, but i really enjoyed my time spent with him, from mucking him out to tacking him up.. Very sweet big guy, cheeky and full of the beans.. I also remember Paul's face lit up the whole of west lothian when Mrs Comrie told him he could ride Gully..

R.I.P Gully, my thought are with you all at this very sad time.. Take care Lynn Mathieson xx”

Hi,

I just wanted to drop you a note to say how sorry i was to hear when gully died at the end of October. I had meant  to offer my condolences the past weeks when i came for my lessons but i am afraid i forgot until showing your website to a colleague and saw the note on there.

He was a fantastic horse and a unique character. I know he wasn’t "my" horse but he had a way of always looking so happy to see you, even when he was half asleep! Being the first horse that I ever "properly" rode (since my second ever lesson), he will always have that special place in my heart. He was infinitely patient with a slow learner and gave me confidence in my riding.

He had a very long and happy with life with you and I am glad he was enjoying himself and being active when he passed away

I shall miss seeing him around and feeding him the odd sneaky polo mint on my way back to the car after my lesson!

With very best wishes, Andy Mcintosh

Another sad loss at Houston farm.

What can I say about the old man

He nipped me or at least tried almost every time I tacked him up but was always there to welcome you to the yard. He ditched me, more than once.

He was an amazingly talented boy who got so excited when he jumped. It was always so good to see him when he came off the bank in the working hunter, his head went down & the buck kicked in and you just knew he was having so much fun.

Sleep well big fella, you treated me well, taught me loads & you'll be sorely missed.
